Annual General Meeting

Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at the Waterville Fire Hall, located at 1415 County Home Rd, Cambridge. Doors will open at 5:30 PM, with the official meeting starting at 6:00 PM.

The Nominations Committee invites members to apply for a position on our Board of Directors. Nomination packages are available at all branches, or you can request one by filling out our contact us form. Nomination period: February 14 – March 14, 2025.

At Valley Credit Union (Valley CU), we’re passionate about serving our community, and now you have the chance to be a part of our future. Every year, we hold elections for available Board of Directors positions, and we want you to be involved!

The open positions and their terms for this year’s election will be listed on this page. To run for a position, you’ll need at least two sponsors who are members of Valley Credit Union.

How to Nominate:
To nominate yourself or someone else, submit a completed nomination package to your local Valley Credit Union branch or email the signed form to us here.

  • Approved Candidate List Posted at Branches: March 21, 2025

  • Election Results: Announced at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on April 24, 2025
 
Valley Credit Union is a democratic financial institution that operates with the best interests of our members, community and environment in mind. You could play an integral role in shaping the future direction of this progressive, dynamic, and caring organization.

To be eligible to run, you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen, 19 years or older, and a member of Valley Credit Union
  • Meet specific requirements outlined in our by-laws

Some exclusions include:

  • Employees or relatives of employees
  • Undischarged bankrupts, auditors, or those not bondable
Any member who is 18 or older and in good standing with a minimum share balance of $5.00 is eligible to vote*. Remember, each member gets one vote per question. We’re committed to making this process as transparent and democratic as possible.





*Share balance of not less than $5.00, the first name on the account, or have full member status as of the date of the Annual General Meeting. The Credit Union Act does not allow members to vote more than once per question or to vote by proxy. If a corporation or association is a member, the Credit Union shall recognize a natural person authorized to represent the corporation or association by a resolution of the directors or governing body of the corporation or association. As referenced in the voting eligibility in the sections 71, 72, and 73 of the Credit Union Act available on the Nova Scotia Legislature website.

Andrea Martin - Chair

Andrea has been a director for 16 years. She is currently the Chair of the Board. She's chaired various Valley Credit Union committees and is currently the Chair of the Audit Committee and represented VCU at several conferences: CU World Conference, CU Canadian Conference, and Atlantic Central meetings.

Andrea is active in her community associations and has held positions such as Director and President. While I currently do not have a position, I do volunteer to help at events and the occasional accounting assistance. I also volunteer to help Mud Creek Rotary at their Toonie Toss Count when asked.

Andrea completed the required training as well as electives which help in her responsibilities. She attends as many conferences as possible to gain extra insight into the "World of Credit Unions". She is also a CPA, which allows her the understanding of the financial aspects of the credit union.

Andrea is very committed to Valley Credit Union and firmly believes in the system.

Richard F. Graham - Vice Chair

Prior to joining the Valley Credit Union, Richard was a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Credit Union through a volunteer sport organization he managed.

 

Richard is a member of the Kentville Rotary Club, a voting member of the Canadian Red Cross, and a member of their Nova Scotia Provincial Advisory Council.

Richard brings many years of skill and experience to the VCU Board of Directors. He has 41 years of experience in the financial services industry, including 36 years with CIBC, of which 25 years was a commercial/corporate banker. Richard spent 10 years as a member of the Board of Directors of a national sport governing body. He volunteered with the Canadian Red Cross 15 years, predominantly in the areas of corporate governance and fund development. Richard also spent 5 years as a member of a Board of Directors of a professionally managed not-for-profit recycling company, whose mandate is to employ consumers with mental health challenges.

Reginald Rose - Secretary

Reginald has previously served on the Shelburne Community Business Development Board (CBDC) for nine years. He served on Church and Exhibition Boards as well as the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation Board for five years and was the Chair of the Investment Committee for two years.

Reginald has an understanding of Board Governance and business operations, which is an asset, and an interest in community organizations. He was a consultant with IG Wealth Management for 31 years and currently runs a stand-alone rural office and built a successful practice with no compliance issues.

Martin Gillis - Former Chair

Marty is Former Chair of the Board for Valley Credit Union. He has been a member of the board for 20 years. He has been a director for a total of 33 years between Valley Credit Union and Avon Credit Union. Marty represented Valley Credit Union at Provincial, National, and International Conferences. 12 years on the Hantsport Town Council and 14 years with the Hantsport Fire Department. Has completed the mandatory Credit Union Director Training with many years of management experience in business.

Brian Sturney

Brian is a self-employed small businessman, residing in the Village of Lawrencetown. Currently he is Captain of the Lawrencetown Volunteer Fire Department.

Brian has been a credit union member for 20 years and is committed to meeting the needs of the board and our valued membership. Brian completed the required director training and serves on a number of committees.

Brian's strengths and training have contributed to the Valley Credit Union Board of Directors for more than 12 years. He looks forward to continuing to meet the needs of our valued membership.

Wayne Fowler

Wayne is very involved in the community and brings experience from these activities to the Board of Directors of Valley Credit Union. He is the President of the Credit Union Centre, Vice President of Western Valley Minor Hockey Association, a member of the Planning & Advisory Committee for the Village of Kingston, and a member of Valley #90 Masonic Lodge. Wayne was a key organizer for Kingston’s nomination for Kraft Hockyville in 2014 in which the arena received second place and $100,000 for upgrades.

James Bell

James enjoys working towards common goals for the business and committees. He has worked with individuals who have experienced financial issues and worked towards common solutions to help the individuals and the company.

Nancy Roscoe-Huntley

Nancy has previously served a three-year term on the Board for Valley Credit Union. She has been a credit union member for many years with accounts for both personal and business.

Nancy has always been involved in both community and work-related organizations. During her 30 years at Acadia University, she served on a number of committees for both the university and union. Some of the committees included Status of Women, Union Negotiating Committees, and taught Union Workshops, to orientate members to the Union. Nancy is currently a member of the Doctor's Committee in Canning. This is a committee to find a doctor to replace the retiring doctor in the community. Nancy has also served on a community committee to get a fire department located in their community.

As a business entrepreneur, Nancy feels she understands the needs for not only a community based financial institution but one that can meet the needs of both business and personal banking requirements. Nancy enjoys working on committees and continues to further her knowledge of the credit union.

Vernon Gaudet

Vernon recently retired from the provincial government, and he was active as local treasurer for over 12 years. He was a Treasurer for Local 4 NSGEU and served on the NSGEU Finance Committee for many years.

Currently, he is on the Lawrencetown Village council. He was president of Clare soccer for a term and believe volunteers truly help a community thrive. He is currently working for a small business in Bridgetown.

Mike Bishop

Michael (Mike) has been a business client at Valley Credit Union for over 25 years. He is an active member of the community and is a Commissioner for the Village of Kingston. Michael is currently on the Board of Directors for the Credit Union Centre.

Michael is a Chartered Professional Accountant and owns his own public practice, Michael Bishop Accounting Limited, located in Kingston and has recently expanded to Greenwood.
